NICOLE MILLER MALONEY

Exploring the human soul through the faces of her subjects has been a transformational journey that has spanned a decade for artist/photographer Nicole Miller Maloney. Capturing the inner expression hidden behind the public faces of the many celebrities that she has photographed has been her trademark. Her latest creation pairs the human element with the raw images of wild animals that has resulted in her first, much anticipated publication, entitled RARE.

For the first time, the human experience is mingled with images of rare animals, while seemingly connecting each through a deeper meaning. More than 100 of Hollywood’s legends, industry leaders and political powerhouses have lined up from around the globe to be photographed with an animal specifically selected for them by Nicole. Cindy Crawford opens the book with a special tribute to Nicole, citing her own transformational experience from the shoot.

The many diverse celebrities include Entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, presidential hopeful Senator John McClain, actors, Dustin Hoffman, Glenn Close, James Caan, businessman/philanthropist Warren Buffet, author Deepak Chropra, sports legend Wayne Gretzky, to even the resolute defender of the environment, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

RARE is a visually stunning body of work that leads the viewer deeper into the lives of both these significant individuals and their paired wild animals. Every photo presents provocative images of these two species in large format, many of which cascade over double-page spreads. Emotion and motion give these images life; fierce cats, seductive snakes, moving bodies expression and swiveled hips. This is being called one of the most significant celebrity portrait books and has been compared to the work of Annie Leibovitz.

As the poet Henry Beston first expressed in 1929 man and the animal kingdom are one in nature.

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear.

They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.” -By Henry Beston

RARE recognizes the impact these significant people and animals have had on our world and lifts them up demonstrating their true magnificence. The beauty within our world, within all species must live on. Cherish it. Nurture it. Live it.

NOTE: Nicole will donate 100% of her royalties for RARE to The International Rescue Committee --- a foundation dedicated to helping every man, woman and child pursue a life of freedom, dignity and justice.
